ATMAS is a scalable, automated system built to streamline test management and asset scheduling, ensuring high‑precision facilities can coordinate equipment, bookings, and research workflows with clarity and zero conflict.
The Automated Test Management and Asset Scheduling System (ATMAS) is a purpose‑built platform designed to solve one of the most persistent challenges in advanced manufacturing and research environments: coordinating specialised physical assets and complex testing schedules without conflict, downtime, or administrative bottlenecks.
Developed as a robust, scalable solution, ATMAS centralises the management of laboratory equipment, testing rigs, and precision machinery into a single, transparent hub. Its core objective is to maximise asset utilisation while preventing scheduling clashes - a critical requirement in facilities where equipment is expensive, highly specialised, and shared across multiple concurrent research projects.
Deployment at the University of Huddersfield
ATMAS was successfully deployed within the University of Huddersfield’s Centre for Precision Technology (CPT), a research group working at the forefront of metrology, advanced manufacturing, and smart systems. The system replaced manual booking sheets, email chains, and spreadsheets with a unified, auditable scheduling workflow that improved visibility and operational predictability.
Key Engineering Challenges
ATMAS required solving several complex technical problems:
- Data Integrity & Security: Protecting maintenance logs, calibration records, and proprietary test parameters from unauthorised access or modification.
- Integration of Asset Tracking + Scheduling: Ensuring real‑time synchronisation between asset status and booking availability.

Architectural Approach
ATMAS was engineered using the MVC pattern, separating data, logic, and presentation for maintainability and scalability.
MySQL was chosen for its transactional integrity which was essential for preventing booking errors and strong performance under concurrent load.
AJAX-powered front‑end interactions enabled real-time updates without page refreshes, delivering a smooth, modern user experience.
The system was developed iteratively using Agile methods, incorporating continuous feedback from CPT staff to refine usability and functionality.
